ABSTRACT Campomanesia rufa (O. Berg) Nied. is a native Cerrado species that presents great edible potential. However, it is a species “in danger of extinction” as recommended by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). No technical and scientific information about the species exists, thus demonstrating the importance of its research. The present work aimed at the physical and chemical characterization of immature and mature C. rufa fruits. The fruits showed a change in coloration from green (b * = 25.11, h = 122.43) to yellowish-green (b * = 34.26 , h = 115.73), an increase in mass (6.54 g to 10.88 g), diameter (23.76 mm to 28.03 mm) and soluble solids (8.00 to 10.80%). The fruits presented high levels of total (1246.35 mg 100 g-1)... |

The objective of this work was to analyze the growth of champa fruit (Campomanesia lineatifolia) as a function of growing-degree days (GDD) in the municipality of Miraflores, in Boyacá, Colombia. Thirty trees were selected at random, and 100 flowers in full bloom were marked in each tree. From the 26th day after flowering until harvest, 10 samples were taken every 15 days to determine the fruit parameters and growth rate. Temperature was recorded to calculate the GDD. From flowering until harvest, 1,489.1 GDD were accumulated over 145 days. Dry and fresh matter mass of pulp, seed, and total fruit were fitted to a logistic growth model, and three growth stages (S1, S2 and S3) were defined. In the S1, growth was slow, and the relative growth remained nearly... |

Evidence from both morphological and molecular phylogenetic data support the view that the circumscissile calycine calyptra, the sole defining character of Cleistocalyx, has multiple origins within Syzygium s. l. and is therefore an invalid basis for generic circumscription. Accordingly, the Fijian Cleistocalyx are transferred to Syzygium, and the new combinations Syzygium decussatus, S. eugenioides and S. seemannii, are made. Syzygium myrtoides is reinstated, and Cleistocalyx ellipticus, C. longiflorus, C. kasiensis and C. seemannii var. punctatus are reduced to the synonymy of S. seemannii. The distribution of S. seemannii is extended to Vanuatu. |

Myrtaceae is a plant family widely used in folk medicine and Syzygium and Eugenia are among the most important genera. We investigated the anti-allergic properties of an aqueous leaf extract of Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels (SC). HPLC analysis revealed that hydrolyzable tannins and flavonoids are the major components of the extract. Oral administration of SC (25-100 mg/kg) in Swiss mice (20-25 g; N = 7/group) inhibited paw edema induced by compound 48/80 (50% inhibition, 100 mg/kg; P <= 0.05) and, to a lesser extent, the allergic paw edema (23% inhibition, 100 mg/kg; P <= 0.05). SC treatment also inhibited the edema induced by histamine (58% inhibition; P <= 0.05) and 5-HT (52% inhibition; P <= 0.05) but had no effect on platelet-aggregating... |

ABSTRACT: One of the biggest challenges for expansion of jabuticaba fruit tree cultivation is the high cost of seedlings due to to difficulties with vegetative propagation. Here, we aimed to evaluate graft survival in combinations of Plinia cauliflora and rootstocks of other species from the Myrtaceae family. The study was carried out at the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná - Campus Dois Vizinhos, Paraná State, Brazil. Eugenia uniflora L., E. involucrata DC, and P. cauliflora were used as rootstocks and were obtained as seeds. The 'whip-and- tongue' and cleft grafting techniques were tested for vegetative propagation. Grafted plants were cultivated in a greenhouse. The experimental design was a randomized complete block, in factorial 3×2... |

The distinction between Anetholea and Syzygium is lessened due to the occurrence of epigeal germination and dry fruitedness in the latter genus also and it is concluded that Anetholea is better placed within Syzygium. Analysis of sequence data from nuclear ribosomal DNA and the chloroplast genome support this conclusion. The sole species of Anetholea, A. anisata, is transferred to Syzygium and the new combination, S. anisatum (Vickery) Craven & Biffin, made. Syzygium wilsonii subsp. cryptophlebium is reinstated at species rank, necessitating the new combination, S. cryptophlebium (F. Muell.) Craven & Biffin. Two new taxa of Syzygium are described from Australia, S. wilsonii subsp. epigaeum Craven & Biffin and S. maraca Craven & Biffin. |
